Unhealed trauma keeps the body's sympathetic nervous system in a constant state of "fight or flight." The "disease model" of addiction is flawed because it removes personal agency. Addiction is more accurately understood as a behavioral coping mechanism to numb the pain of unresolved trauma. Healing requires addressing the root cause of the pain, not just treating the addiction as a brain defect.

When the past no longer dictates your present reactions or consumes your energy, that energy becomes fully available for the present moment, signifying that healing has occurred.
