The US offered financial incentives for peace, failing to grasp that Iran's goal was not money but solidifying regional dominance. The agreement's clauses on controlling the Strait of Hormuz and establishing a sphere of influence were Iran's primary objectives, which the US negotiator seemingly overlooked.
Before the war, Iran was a declining power. Now, by controlling 20% of the world's oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran has gained significant strategic leverage it previously lacked. The US bombing campaign created the opportunity for this power grab.
US bombing has destroyed a percentage of Iran's drone arsenal, but it's impossible to eliminate the threat from the air. The drones can be hidden anywhere in a mountainous region 1.5 times the size of California, creating an insurmountable scale problem for aerial surveillance and strikes.
A leader facing a strategic defeat has a choice: accept the loss and its immediate political damage, or escalate militarily. Escalation, even if unlikely to succeed, delays the public reckoning and preserves a slim hope of victory, a phenomenon known as the "escalation trap."
Research shows the primary driver of suicide terrorism is not religion but the military occupation of territory a group considers its homeland. A US ground operation to seize a port, even a small one, would create the conditions for a mass casualty suicide attack campaign against Americans globally.
With no viable military or diplomatic solution, the conflict is on a path to endless escalation. The most probable end comes from domestic politics: if the opposition party wins control of Congress in the midterm elections, they can use their constitutional power of the purse to cut funding for the war.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz (20% of world oil) and now the Red Sea bypass routes, coupled with depleted strategic reserves and attacks on global refining capacity, creates an imminent economic crisis. This is the "nightmare scenario" that policymakers have feared.
After signing the MOU peace deal, the Trump administration immediately undermined it by establishing a military presence in Lebanon (violating Article 1), encouraging uncoordinated shipping (violating Article 5), and placing new conditions on Iran's assets (violating Article 11), prompting Iran's retaliation.
While the war is unpopular overall, it has overwhelming support (77-85%) among MAGA Republicans. Historical patterns show that when troops die, this core base is less likely to call for withdrawal and more likely to rally around the cause, viewing withdrawal as an insult to the fallen.
Recognizing that the Strait of Hormuz is a declining asset as bypass pipelines are built, Iran's grand strategy is to establish a sphere of influence. This involves using proxies like Hezbollah and the Houthis to control all potential oil transit routes, ensuring their long-term dominance over regional energy flow.
The 8,000 US ground troops in the Gulf of Oman are not for a full-scale invasion but for a limited operation to capture a remote Iranian port like Jask. This action would serve as a symbolic victory for President Trump to showcase strength before the midterm elections, despite its limited strategic value.
A loss in the upcoming midterm elections, potentially triggered by a perceived defeat in Iran or a resulting economic crisis, would likely result in impeachment proceedings and paralyze his domestic agenda. Escalating the conflict is a high-risk gamble to prevent this political outcome.
