The vast majority of "AI PM" roles involve bolting on AI capabilities like chatbots or summarization to existing products. Only 20% are "AI-native" roles where the product, like ChatGPT, is fundamentally probabilistic and impossible without AI. This clarifies the job market landscape.

The traditional PM function, which builds sequential, multi-month roadmaps based on customer feedback, is ill-suited for AI. With core capabilities evolving weekly, AI companies must embed research teams directly with customer-facing teams to stay agile, rendering the classic PM role ineffective.

AI won't replace product managers but will elevate their role. PMs will shift from executing tasks like financial forecasting to managing a team of specialized AI agents, forcing them to focus on high-level strategy and assumption-checking.

Companies mistakenly try to hire one person for both applying AI in products and building the underlying AI infrastructure. These are two distinct roles requiring different skill sets. A VP of Engineering leverages existing AI for efficiency, while a Head of AI builds the core platforms for the company.

The rise of AI tools isn't replacing the PM role, but transforming it. PMs who embrace an "AI-enhanced" workflow for research, docs, and prototyping will gain a massive productivity advantage, ultimately displacing those who stick to traditional methods.
