Unlike moral panics over TVs or phones, the concern about social media is validated by users who report feeling addicted and harmed. This self-awareness from young people makes the current crisis fundamentally different and more credible than previous technological shifts.
Former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy argues the tech debate should mirror medicine by asking, "Is this product safe for kids?" This flips the burden of proof, demanding that platforms demonstrate safety rather than forcing the public and policymakers to prove definitive harm after the fact.
Young people are turning to AI chatbots for emotional support because they are always available and won't challenge them. This avoids the difficult but necessary "pushback" that real friends provide, replacing genuine, challenging connection with easy, agreeable interaction.
The ability to interact with others is a muscle that strengthens with use. Over-reliance on online communication, where one can hide behind a screen, prevents this muscle from developing, leading to real-world social anxiety and skill atrophy.
A stark indicator of social skill decay is that college students now describe the once-central social hub of the cafeteria as "terrifying." The prospect of unstructured, in-person conversation with strangers creates profound anxiety for a generation accustomed to curated online interactions.
The debate over platform misinformation is misframed as a free speech issue. The crucial action is not what users post, but what the platform's algorithm chooses to amplify. This algorithmic choice is a deliberate act for which platforms hold moral and operational responsibility.
While companies have embraced hybrid work for its flexibility and productivity benefits, they have largely failed to address its negative impact on social connection. This oversight damages engagement, creativity, and retention, as strong workplace relationships are a key driver of all three.
An unintended consequence of AI is the erosion of homework's social function. What was once an opportunity for students to call friends, compare notes, and learn collaboratively is becoming a purely solo activity mediated by AI, removing a key avenue for peer-based learning and connection.
The argument that alcohol's social benefits outweigh its health risks is a false trade-off. Relying on any substance for social connection indicates a deeper problem with social skills, a logic that is readily rejected for other harmful substances like cigarettes.
