Engineers and other analytical professionals are so skilled at rationalization that they can unknowingly justify emotionally-driven financial decisions with logic. This makes them more susceptible to emotional investing than less analytical individuals who may be more aware of their biases.
An HSA offers a unique triple tax advantage: contributions are pre-tax, growth is tax-deferred, and qualified withdrawals are tax-free. Instead of using it for immediate medical costs, max it out, invest the funds, pay minor medical bills out-of-pocket, and save receipts for future tax-free reimbursement in retirement.
Even if you exceed income limits for direct Roth IRA contributions, you may be able to add an extra $20-30k annually. The "Mega Backdoor Roth" strategy involves contributing to an after-tax 401(k) (if your plan allows it) and then converting it to a Roth account for tax-free growth and withdrawals.
When transitioning careers, don't discard your background. Find a way to merge your old expertise with your new field to create a unique niche. This helps you get off the ground faster than starting from scratch. For example, an engineer can specialize in financial advice for other engineers.
Many investors avoid selling appreciated assets to defer capital gains tax, leading to over-concentration and risk. Instead, reframe this tax as a positive outcome—it means you have successfully made money. The goal should be to pay more capital gains tax over your lifetime, not less.
The psychological pain of making an active decision that turns out wrong (e.g., selling a stock that then rises) feels worse than the pain of inaction (holding a stock that falls). This "regret aversion" leads to decision paralysis, causing investors to hold assets they know they should sell.
A cognitive bias called the "disposition effect" makes it psychologically painful to realize a loss, but feels good to lock in a profit. This leads investors to irrationally hold onto declining assets hoping for a rebound while selling rising ones too early, regardless of their future potential.
An engineering background in systems and processes is a powerful asset for business management. By creating efficient, systems-oriented workflows, you can manage a significantly larger asset base or customer load with a smaller team. The speaker manages $250M in assets with just two employees, while peers require four to seven.
The power of compounding is most potent in your early career. Saving a modest amount like $200 per month from age 20 to 30 can result in a million-dollar nest egg by age 65. This is more effective than starting at 30 and saving a higher amount for the next 35 years due to the longer compounding period.
