Jason Wenk's first 401k advisory business saw high churn because customers tired of paying for advice that rarely changed. A churn survey revealed they would pay much more if the service simply managed their accounts for them, validating a higher-value, managed service model.
To scale his advisory firm, Wenk built proprietary software for proposals and onboarding. When other advisors saw his growth and asked to use his 'system,' he realized licensing this internal tech was a more scalable business model than hiring more planners himself.
The wealth management industry forces advisors to stitch together separate systems for custody, reporting, and billing—even though the custodian holds all the data. This illogical fragmentation, built on mainframe tech, creates a massive opportunity for a modern, all-in-one platform to provide a superior solution.
Large custodians resisted offering fractional shares not due to technical limits, but likely as a business decision. This forced higher idle cash balances (for float revenue) and pushed clients towards mutual funds, which paid hefty distribution fees and were the only fractional-share-like option available.
When brokers shifted to zero-commission trading, it forced the industry to ask how firms truly make money. This strategic move revealed that the real profits came from hidden streams like cash float and payment-for-order-flow, exposing the commission as 'smoke and mirrors' and creating an opening for more transparent models.
By bundling custody with software that advisors previously bought separately, Altruist generates more revenue per dollar than incumbents. Simultaneously, advisors save 60-80% on total costs by eliminating third-party vendors. This creates a powerful win-win where better integration benefits both platform and user.
AI platforms like Altruist's 'Hazel' automate laborious, high-value work like complex tax planning. This reduces the unit cost of a sophisticated analysis from thousands of dollars to just a few, making high-end financial advice accessible to a much broader market, not just the wealthy.
Financial advisors traditionally face a compromise: serve many clients with lower quality or serve a few with high-touch service. AI acts as a 'great equalizer,' enabling advisors to deliver highly personalized, quality service at scale to a much larger client base, fundamentally changing the business model.
Wenk offers a contrarian view that the most impactful AI companies won't be the 'money guzzling' foundational model creators. Instead, it will be vertical-specific businesses that apply AI to solve proven industry problems, unlocking trillions in measurable economic value for consumers and society.
