The primary area of innovation is shifting from base models to the "harnesses"—the applications and SDKs that make models useful. Products like Cursor and OpenAI's Codex are becoming crucial differentiators by focusing on user experience and workflow integration. The application layer, not the model layer, may now determine market leadership.
OpenAI's models developed an obsession with "goblins" due to reinforcement learning "spilling over" from one personality profile to others. This highlights a serious risk where undesirable quirks can multiply across model generations, creating new, hard-to-audit challenges for AI alignment and safety.
Anthropic is not only raising funds at a valuation potentially higher than OpenAI's but its shares are also trading at a premium on secondary markets. This "flippening" signals a significant shift in investor sentiment, suggesting the market believes in a multi-polar AI landscape and is betting on multiple winners, not just OpenAI.
Intense demand for AI tokens is outstripping compute supply, making flat-rate SaaS pricing unsustainable. Companies like GitHub are now shifting to usage-based billing to cover escalating inference costs, marking a fundamental change in how AI products are sold and signaling a broader industry trend.
The US government is restricting Anthropic's commercial rollout of its new model, Mythos, over concerns it could hamper the government's own access to compute. This move treats AI capacity as a strategic national resource and effectively creates a de facto licensing system for powerful models, marking a new era of AI governance.
The builders of AI may have a skewed perspective on its real-world impact. They often extrapolate from their tech-centric experiences and fail to grasp how technology diffuses in the broader economy. Their predictions about societal consequences, such as mass job displacement, should therefore be viewed with healthy skepticism.
